What’s the purpose of education? or having a teacher?

I had a very interesting conversation with a friend today. We were discussing about how some people act and behave in a workplace. We both work for a University.

The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Malcolm S. Fobes

Education is not preparation for life; Education is life itself.

John Dewey

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.

Albert Einstein

These are what I have believed all the time about education. I have met many wise and talented individuals who have compassionately committed to provide higher education to those who wants to learn more.

For past few years, I had privilege to work in a tertiary education. It gave me a great opportunity to observe things happening behind lecture rooms. Many episodes of bullying, suicide, horizontal and vertical violence, and politics were presented to me. It is a competitive environment where education has turn into politics and business.

I had to question myself “am I in a correct place that provides higher education or am I back to school?”
We have professors who are too busy chasing after the money, reputation and politics.
We have professors who are trying so hard to look better than others for promotion.
We have professors who promise but do not deliver.
What are we education our future leaders?

A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.

Brad Henry

The teacher is the one who gets most out of the lessons, and the true teacher is the learner.

Elbert Hubbard

I have met great teachers in my life. Some I will remember for the rest of my life. Some have taught me nothing but facts and knowledge.

I will remember those who have taught me important lessons of life rather than facts on the textbooks.

Do you remember any teachers from your life?
What do you remember about them?
What have they taught you?
