Who’s friend? Who’s acquaintance?

For many years, my friends circle had two colours: black or white; in or out. Everyone will be in once they’ve gained my trust and they’ll be out when they’ve crossed my boundaries for twice. This means that it will take me awhile to let them in to my white circle. Similarly, it will take me awhile to move one from white circle to black circle. However, once they’ve moved out from white circle, I will distance from them like turning off a switch. I guess, it was a protective function for myself. To determine whether this person is trustworthy or not. This is how I lived for a long time.

Once they’re in my inner circle, I will do everything I can to keep them in there. For some, I might be over protecting them. For others, I must be very intimidating.

Recently, my friends circle transformed to a very colourful one. Start bright orange in the middle, go through rainbow colours, and farther end in a dark. For me, where the warm colour turn into cool colour, is my boundary for friends and acquaintances.

When I first time encountered the word ‘acquaintances’, I couldn’t understand its meaning. As I only had black or white friend circle, it didn’t occur to me there are different types of friendship you can build.
So what’s the differences between friends and acquaintances?

Acquaintance: a degree of friendship called slight when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or famous.

Ambrose Bierce

Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance.

Rabindranath Tagore

Your friends will know you better in first minute you meet than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years.

Richard Bach

An acquaintance merely enjoys your company, a fair-weather companion flatters when all is well, a true friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear.

E. A. Bucchianeri

So, acquaintances are those who will walk in and out of my life depending on the weather. They are not one of those that I can wholeheartedly trust.

A true friend is someone who is there for you when he’d rather be anywhere else.

Len Wein

Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.

G. Randolf

If a person has just one good friend, their happiness is doubled and their life immeasurably enriched.

This is genuine wealth.

Daisaku Ikeda

I have good friends.
Good friends did not walk away from me even when I was in lower life state and lower energy.
Good friends repeatedly told me that I don’t have to pretend in front of them.
Good friends pushed me to breakthrough challenging times.
Good friends walk alongside when I felt like I couldn’t walk.
Good friends challenge me with my limited beliefs.
Good friends included me in their life journey.
Good friends celebrated my achievement and victories as their own.
Good friends allow me to share what I want to share, respect my current journey and cherish my life as who I am.

When I think back now, although so many people walked in and out, passed by, I have good friends who walked through my most challenging times in life. In that sense, I was never felt alone or helpless or no one to turn to. They are my treasures in my life.

Who’s your true friend?
Who do you have in your life that walk alongside you in your most difficult times?
Can you name one of your good friend?
