For many years, I was living in the way because it seems okay. There were not defining moments when I know, what I am investing for. Everything become obvious only when I looked back and reflected.
There were two things I remembered through my youth when I stood on the crossroads, when I was lost in my direction. These two things or guidance were given by two people at different point of my life.
First guidance was given my tutor at the time when I didn’t know what to choose for my future career. He looked into my eyes and simply said:
“No matter what you choose or decided at the end, just trust it is the correct path. If you feel you want to change your path at any given point, you have enough power to do so. Just simply trust yourself and decision. I will support your decision regardless of its content.”
It didn’t solve any of my problem but it was enough to choose widely rather than locked to what others think I should do.
Second guidance was given when I was struggling with my study. I was at the crossroad whether to change my course or keep striving for what I have started with. It wasn’t directed to me but it was enough for me to stop and think what I really want to do in my life. He said:
“If you have two paths that you can choose from, always choose that one which seems more challenging because that path guarantees you will grow more than the other path you didn’t choose. There will be deeper meaning in you choosing that path.”
When I am at crossroad, these are things that I remind myself, before making any decisions. About a year ago, I decided to undertake a personal development course. It was fear that prevented me to jump into it but those guidance reminded me how to make important decisions. Although it took me about a half year to overcome that fear, I opened so many doors that I never imagined that I will open.

If someone ask me whether I will regret some of my decisions, I probably will say no because if I made any different decisions, I will not be who I am here today. It wasn’t a smooth path or journey full of exciting things. I am sure because of those sunny and stormy days, I am who I am. Every single event, regardless big or small, they’ve led me to here today. If one little event didn’t happen, it will be a different life.
Someone gave me an analogy about this.
Let’s imagine you went on a cruise with a destination on your mind. If you change a degree of your course by accident, you might not reach your destination. It seems little but it is enough to change your final destination.
You will pass through storms and heavy rains, and at times you will suffer defeat.
The essence of the creative life, however, is not to give up in the face of defeat but to follow the rainbow that exists within your heart.Daisaku Ikeda
So, what am I investing in myself that my future self will thanks me for? I am investing my time and effort to do anything in front of me, living my life to the fullest, enjoying everything regardless of its impact. In such way, I am giving my future self evidences that all I had to do is to trust my decisions and keep moving forward.
What are you investing on yourself today?
Where are you heading?
What will guide you when you need to make a decision?
