Why we have adverse life?

There were times when I questioned why others get to where I want to be quicker than I did. It seems to me that they have easier ride of life than I am. I felt that I had to work harder than others to get where I want to be. I don’t think I was lazier than others but everything seemed very far away. If such feeling continues, eventually I felt that I am hoping for impossible.

If everything is smooth sailing right from the beginning, we cannot become people of substance and character.

By surmounting paining setbacks and obstacles, we can create a brilliant history of triumph that will shine forever.

That is what makes life so exciting and enjoyable.

In any field of endeavor, those who overcome hardships and grow as human beings are advancing towards success and victory in life.

One day, I was talking to a senior person about life struggles. Probably, I wasn’t just talking but complaining about how others have everything so perfectly without a problem while I was experiencing problem after problem. Following were our conversation.
Senior: I think I had similar question myself. When you seek for some encouragement or guidance, will you go to someone who struggled throughout his/her life or someone who had smooth sailing throughout his/her life?
Me: I will go to a person who had overcome their struggles.
Senior: Why is that?
Me: I think they have more wisdom about life and I think they are ready to take any challenges.
Senior: Yes. I agree. So, I believe that what you are struggling or challenging now, there is a meaning behind it. May be you cannot see it right now but one day, you will understand why you had to experience all these. You might be experiencing these so you can understand someone who might be struggling about something similar to you. You might be experiencing these so you can build your strength. Regardless of its reason, you are experiencing it now to build your strength.

Only by overcoming life’s problems and obstacles can we become truly strong.

If everything always goes smoothly, we will grow complacent and be unable to build a solid foundation for our lives.

Only by experiencing suffering ourselves can we understand the suffering of others and deepen our compassion.

I’ve experienced nearly a year of isolation during my primary school. Through that, I’ve learned to enjoy time by myself, creative writing, and human observation. When I migrated to a new country, I was able to spend time for myself.

Another example is that I struggle about living someone else’s dream. I do not regret any of my decision but it was painful to keep studying something I didn’t enjoy at the time. It was definitely easier to give up than keep going without knowing why. However, now I understand that without those painful years, I wouldn’t met my supervisor, and discovered my passion for research.

This actually reminded me of a dialogue I had with my other senior. He illustrated this through attending a training course.
“Say for example, there were people who struggled to pay for this training course she wanted to attend while others paid without a concern. Who do you think will remember this training course for the rest of their life? Yes. Probably attendees and supporters will remember this training course but those who struggled to attend will remember this training course for the rest of their life. I think, more challenging it was for you to fulfill what you wanted to achieve, more you’re giving it a meaning. It is not just an achievement anymore. It is more than that. It is the journey you have walked to the end on your own feet.”

These days I feel challenges in life are adding more colours to my life which makes my life unique. Although I always wished for an ‘ordinary’ life, probably there is no such thing as an ‘ordinary’ life. Every single life is unique in its own right and that’s why we have diverse colour in the world.

How are you uniquely contributing to the world today?
What is the purpose of your current challenges?
What kind of life do you want to live?
