What is the depth of my life?

It is not length of life, but depth of life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“How can I determine depth of my life? What’s the true value of my life?”
I asked a senior person years ago. She looked at me and shared her life experience.

“My son died in his early 30s. Some people said that they were sorry to hear about this. However, I am proud of my son. In his 30+ years, he lived more than a normal person would. He achieved 3 times more than a normal person could achieve. He enjoyed 3 times more than a normal person would enjoy in their 30s. The value of his life couldn’t be determined by how long he had to live. I think it should be determined by how much he had achieved. He enjoyed his life to his fullest. Therefore, I think he had a great life!”

The major value in life is not what you get.

The major value in life is what you become.

Jim Rohn

At the time, I probably didn’t fully appreciated her experience. All I grasped from her experience was that the value of my life is determined by how much I have achieved in my life.

Then, I had to think about what are my achievements. I couldn’t answer this question for a long time. One day, I realised for me “continuous growth” is an important determinants of my life. I felt I didn’t want to be fixed or stagnant in life. Rather, I want to grow throughout my life. In such way, I can ensure that I am moving forward.

What matters is the value we’ve created in our lives, the people we’ve made happy and how much we’ve grown as people.
