Let’s talk about past, present and future…

I am a believer in past, present and future. I see past, present and future as a current while present encompasses both past and future.

Present effects are due to karmic causes from the past.

However, future effects arise from the causes we make in the present.

It is always the present that counts.

It is what we do in the present moment that decides our future; our past causes do not govern our future as well.

Nichiren Buddhism emphasizes that no matter what kind of karmic causes we have made in the past, through the causes we make in the present we can achieve a brilliant future.

One day, I was having a conversation with my uncle. He shared about his life journey from when he was young. He said that he worked reallly hard to get to where he is now. He didn’t have luxury to study like I do, or spend time like I do. Listening to his journeys made me become aware that my current life is built on top of efforts by parents, grandparents and other past generations.

As I started to reflect on what he had shared, I felt something is bothering me. I felt something is not right or missing. Slowly it had revealed itself.

My uncle will only share about his life up to the point before immigrating to another country. He decided to immigrate for the sake of his daughter, to give her a better life. However, to do so, he had to leave everything behind, his career, family, and lifestyle that he enjoyed. Settling to new country wasn’t an easy journey for him. To some aspect, I guess he is still adapting to his new lifestyle.

So what bothered me?
He didn’t share anything about his present or future life. He didn’t share where he is at and where he wants to go.
So how I felt?
I felt like he was living in his past. I felt like he is lost in the purpose of life. Then, I felt like I don’t really know him any more. May be there’s more to his journey.

The meaningful question is never what we did yesterday, but what we have learned from it and are doing today.

Marianne Williamson

In many occassions I hear what my uncle did or handled sitaution or event. I hear how he approach people and his mindset. Current life and people he encounter in everyday life are not to his standard.

Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.

Will Rogers

How woud you like to live today?
Where are you heading with your life?
Are you living in this present moment?
